Tolkien's 'Silmarillion' anthology should become a TV series

The Issue

In an age of widely-discussed television series, complex plots spanning several tens of hours, and the resultant 'binges' of show-watching, it is a good time to capitalise on this trend in entertainment. 'The Silmarillion' is a series of books by J. R. R. Tolkien, and collectively makes up the predecessor to his celebrated trilogy, 'The Lord of the Rings'.

The signatories of this petition suggest that 'The Silmarillion' be made into a television series for public consumption, in the fashion of contemporary series, yet embellished with the charm of original fantasy mixed with epic scale and classical storytelling. What 'The Silmarillion' offers in constancy of characters, consistency of virtue, and child-friendly themes would be a welcome alternative to what is popular today. In addition, the collection of books makes for a long and enjoyable plot that could easily be written into several seasons, with freedom to generate interest in particular characters and relationships between these characters.

Fantastical locations and an exhaustive mythology penned down by Tolkien himself provides the best of opportunities to expand on the universe that was first introduced on screen with 'The Lord of the Rings', with continued financial success in 'The Hobbit'. We humbly propose that 'The Silmarillion' would be worth making into a series, and could easily be turned into one of the most popular and loved shows on television.
