First and foremost, we have a Gofundme Page started! If you'd like to contribute to the overall campaign efforts, including the custom research and awareness campaigns, please do so here. Thank you to all who have given on Change.org as well. I love this platform and appreciate you supporting it.
Also, we just surpassed 332,000! So exciting to learn that others are tired of the excess plastic in online shopping.
With just over 72 hours before my meeting with Congressman Zeldin, the countdown is on to draw all the research, comments, insights gathered to date into a persuasive presentation.
At the core of this issue are three key themes:
1 - Taxpayers are paying the fiscal and environmental toll for plastic waste that is clogging up recycling efforts and contributing to a costly waste management crisis. This is a multi-billion dollar issue that we should not be shouldering alone.
2 - Much of this plastic is not necessary and many consumers would prefer not to have it. Similar to our consumer right to refuse junk mail, spam phone calls or spam email, we feel it's also our right to refuse what we perceive as garbage coming to us in the mail. We want the right to choose what we order and how it comes to us. Shopping offline is not an option for all nor is access to recycling, especially for these materials.
3 - Plastic filler and packaging is not disclosed at the time of shipping so consumers lose any power they have to be informed. Convenience got us into this mess, let's make it convenient to get out of it. Let's make packaging materials a choice in the same way we chose what goes in the cart.
