Yesterday, Keak was scheduled to begin his prison sentence. Thankfully, the judge granted him an additional 60 days to improve his medical condition. His new sentencing date is April 11. While this is good news, it’s important that we keep up the pressure.

Keak’s condition may improve in 60 days, but he will never receive the care he needs while in prison. Many California state prisons aren’t even ADA compliant. Just yesterday an inmate in Delaware died because the nurse was required to get approval before calling 911. Someone is dead because the nurse couldn’t do something that we are all taught to do as children. How can they say someone with disabilities will get proper care?

Sentencing should not be one-size fits all. House arrest is a more than adequate option for nonviolent offenders with disabilities. Not only is it better for the disabled, it also puts less strain on already overburdened prisons and costs less for tax payers.

Keak is grateful for the support from all of you. Let’s continue to use our voices to fight for Keak and the rights of all disabled prisoners.
