Growing up in a household where creativity was encouraged, I've always believed that self-expression is a vital part of both personal development and education. Attending Lourdes College in Cagayan de Oro, I've cherished the academic excellence and supportive community, but I feel an important piece is missing: the freedom for students to express their individuality through makeup, hairstyles, fashion, and personal style.

In today’s world, self-expression is as crucial as math or science. It helps students develop confidence and a sense of identity, which are essential in their personal and social growth. However, current policies at Lourdes College restrict students from expressing themselves fully in these ways, with stringent rules on appearance that do not allow for individual styles.

Research has shown that allowing students more freedom in how they express themselves can positively impact academic performance and social inclusion. According to a study published by the American Psychological Association, students who feel comfortable expressing themselves are less likely to experience social anxiety and more likely to engage actively in class.

I understand the school's need to maintain discipline and respect within its community, but I believe allowing personal style does not contradict these values. Instead, it can be integrated into the existing dress code with clear guidelines that emphasize respect and appropriateness without stifling creativity.

We propose that the college administration revisits its appearance policies, engaging students and faculty in dialogue to create a balanced approach that honors individuality while maintaining the school's standards. This policy revision should include:

1. Guidelines on makeup that allow for self-expression while ensuring safety and appropriateness.
2. Allowance of a range of hairstyles that respect cultural and individual differences.
3. Flexibility in fashion choices as long as they meet a set of respectful and appropriate criteria.
4. Education for students on how personal style impacts professional environments without curtailing individual creativity.

By implementing these changes, Lourdes College can become a leader in fostering both academic excellence and personal development. Let’s allow students to showcase their individuality, thereby preparing them better for the diverse world outside school.
