CHRISTMAS ON THE SQUARE DENIED: The Lawrence County Commission has decided that Christmas on the Square will not be allowed to return to the courthouse lawn in downtown Moulton this year.

During Friday’s meeting, Commissioner Bobby Burch made another motion to allow the event to be held on the newly restored courthouse lawn. However, with no second from Commissioners Dana Charles and Norman Poole, the motion failed. Commissioner Amard Martin was not present, though he previously expressed support for Chairman Nathan Kitchens and County Administrator Heather Rose Dyar’s recommendation to deny the request.

“We’ve had overwhelming support — letters from businesses and our superintendent, and so many calls and emails that I lost count. Every single one was in favor of bringing Christmas on the Square back,” said Commissioner Bobby Burch. “It’s disappointing to see that kind of public support ignored, but I’m still hopeful we can find a way forward to keep this tradition alive.”

The Christmas on the Square Committee expressed their appreciation to everyone who showed support for returning the event to its home — including those who signed petitions, emailed county leaders, shared messages, and spoke up in favor of continuing the beloved tradition.

While the event’s future remains uncertain, the committee says community backing has been overwhelming and that they remain committed to preserving the spirit and togetherness that Christmas on the Square represents for Lawrence County.
