UPDATE (August 18, 2018) - Appeal by Zoocheck and Voice for Animals Society - Edmonton in their judicial review for LUCY - no decision on this yet.

On March 8, 2018 three Justices on the the Alberta Court of Appeal heard arguments by the attorney for Zoocheck and V4A, Stephen Panunto, and attorneys for the Alberta government and City of Edmonton. Mr. Panunto did a great job clarifying "why" this is an important case to be heard, as he sought legal standing for their judicial review to be heard on its merits.

'Lawyer Stephen Panunto, acting for Voices for Animals [sic] and Zoocheck, argued Thursday the appeal court should grant his clients standing because Lucy can’t advocate for herself, and because there is no other avenue outside the courts to get a declaration that the zoo is contravening the Animal Protection Act.

He said that his clients have repeatedly been told there is a different process for making their argument, but no one will tell them what that process is.

“My clients are not going to give up until they are told they cannot do anything for Lucy,” Panunto said.'

Zoocheck and V4A expect to have an answer within a month from the Court of Appeal, so please stay tuned as this crucial legal action for Lucy unfolds.
