Dear Supporter, Many thanks to you for taking the safe-driving pledge, and becoming a change agent on our chaotic roads. It is a small drop in the ocean of efforts that I hope can grow larger with support from like-minded people. It is such a simple way for those who wish for safer, more disciplined traffic but lead busy lives, to play a critical role without much extra time or effort. This campaign has been covered by Satyamev Jayate as a follow-up to their episode ‘Road Accidents or Murders?’ (http://www.satyamevjayate.in/road-accidents-or-murders/episode-2impact.aspx?uid=s3e2-impact-a5) and also Hindustan Times (16Jan15). The number of signatures is steadily increasing but we still have a very long way to go. The objective is for the number of change agents to increase rapidly so we reach critical mass sooner than later, and influence positive behaviour on our roads. Simple examples: as against blocked left turns, a stream of cars in the left lane with left indicators on and constantly moving forward encourages others to stay away, knowing it is a free left instead of blocking it; again, stopping at a red light dissuades others from breaking the light while dashing through encourages others – proving that good examples do indeed spread good road behaviour. And so may our tribe increase! With this aim, I request you to actively share this petition on your networks, be it facebook/ twitter/ whatsapp/ mail, so we can channelize the untapped potential of that large group of people who can be soldiers in this fight for safer roads. Based on feedback received, 3 minor modifications have been made to the pledge from the 250th signature, so through this update, I also wish to make you aware of these (namely, the phrases within quotes in the 3 points below, each of which you will agree directly reduces accidents and saves lives). 1. I will never over-speed ... "and always slow down when approaching any junction". 9. I will respect rights of other commuters…"and always yield to ambulances, fire or emergency vehicles." 14. I will show patience …; "always park responsibly" and display courtesy… Thank you for once again for joining the fight for safer roads and look forward to your continued support. Sincerely, Odette
