Dear friends, A while back I told you that all 4 of the “Valemount dogs” (German Shepherds Max, Timber, Zeus, and Rango) had been adopted and that I would share more information when I could. I don’t even know most of the details myself, but as you know, the story began when John Buehler was in an altercation with police, was subsequently shot and killed, and had allegedly used the dogs to protect himself during that situation. The dogs were seized and likely would have been euthanized if not for the fact that Prince George Equine and Animal Rescue (PGEAR) stepped up to take the dogs until the court proceedings were complete. I contacted the Crown Prosecutor prior to the court date at which the dogs’ fate was to be decided and he told me that he "loved dogs" and wanted these dogs to be spared and that, if John Buehler’s daughter signed over custody of them, they would go the SPCA to be adopted. I was grateful to him for advocating for the dogs and that this was an option, but I was also concerned that the SPCA might be under pressure themselves to euthanize Max, Zeus, Timber, and Rango if they were granted custody of them. When the petition asking that the dogs be saved was shared on Facebook, some people contacted me offering assistance for the dogs. It became clear to me that there had been several people involved in trying to save these dogs right from the time they were in trouble, from PGEAR to qualified animal behaviourists who had assessed the dogs’ behaviour to folks who donated to their care, fosters and willing adopters. Thankfully in court that day John Buehler’s daughter surrendered the dogs. But I was still concerned for their lives because the court granted custody to the SPCA. I don’t know what happened behind the scenes after that day, but the end result was that the dogs never left PGEAR after the court decision. With all the legwork that had already been done by PGEAR prior to the court decision, the dogs were immediately neutered and 3 of them were adopted out quickly. The fourth dog, Rango, now lives with Nicola and Grant at PGEAR. I don't know what went on behind the scenes, but I know that a lot of work, cooperation, and compromise took place to ensure this fantastic outcome for the dogs. Thank you to Nicola and Grant at PGEAR, the BC SPCA, Crown Counsel, the RCMP, the judge, Shanna Buehler, the dogs’ new families, and everyone else who was involved in making this a happy ending for Max, Timber, Zeus, and Rango. Prince George Equine and Animal Rescue relies on donations to do their fantastic work and are well-respected in their community. If you would like to express your gratitude to them for saving the Valemount dogs by making a donation to help them continue with this work, please do so by clicking on the following link and then on the "donate" button on the bottom right-hand side of their web page.
