Make dogs sentient beings in all countries
The issue
Class all dogs as sentient beings? Some might believe that my quest is too broad, too unrealistic, and unattainable. I've long believed that dogs are like small children. Man's best friend. Loyal, understanding and capable of emotion and feelings such as jealously, love, hate, devotion. Capable of forward planning, possessing memory, they are trainable, intelligent and show emotion by the use of tail and eyes. Some among us can even see facial expression.
Are you even aware of the cruelty that some dogs experience in their lives every day somewhere in every country in the world. The cruelty stems from a variety of different human beliefs and values, from cultural and religious backgrounding and from trauma experienced by people. There are many forms of cruelty towards dogs - it might be that a family dog is just a plaything for the children and that when they kick it or handle the animal too strongly it's deemed perfectly acceptable because the dog will soon forget about that anyway. It's just a dog.
Or the man who gets a sense of control over his life by chaining up the guard dog in his yard for every single day of its life, forgetting to feed it for a few days, and leaving it out in wind, rain, hot sun and/or snow. No social contact, no emotional attachment, no personal contact. Ever. Its just the guard dog.
Then there are the people in the countries that eat dog.
To sustain your life by eating an animal is a practice that Man has carried out for centuries - but are you aware that in some countries it is considered acceptable to crucify, punch and then skin and boil alive a fully grown dog, apparently the adrenaline released by cruelly treating the dog in this manner makes the dog taste absolutely delicious. A dog. A dog with ears, fur, tail. Boiled. Alive. Sometimes these dogs are commercially stolen from pet owners. Taken in trucks and sold in small cages at markets to butchers. Other dogs chained up or crammed in cages, see the other dogs being tortured, apparently, it all helps with the release of that all important adrenaline. I have no problem with the eating of dog. It's the way that they are killed. Check out Yulin Dog Festival held every year in China. Prepare to be totally disgusted, it will change the way you look at your own dog and how you view this petition. In dog eating countries people have no preference whether it be a dalmatian, a fox terrier or a golden retriever...they are no different to the dogs you own, or the dogs we see being walked on beaches.
This petition is about prevention of cruelty to an animal that is more than 'just an animal'. There are different levels of cruelty just as there are different levels of kindness. Don't you think it's time that some people who are unable to understand what it must be like for dogs experiencing cruelty to be were forced to treat dogs more humanely.
I am just an ordinary person, a mum, a woman, someone's friend, neighbour and relative. I am no expert in the field of activism but I am sick of hearing about, and seeing images and newscasts about people mistreating dogs from all over the world. I am tired of seeing pictures of emaciated dogs, bags of bones having to be put to sleep because of someone's pathetic craving for some sort of control, perversion, abusive upbringing or liking for dog meat. And find the sentencing for such people fail to be level with how most people feel about dogs. Help me to get dogs to be classed as sentient.
Some might think that this is unrealistic. After all, I am talking about the whole world accepting that dogs are sentient, not just one country. If you want to be part of huge shift in humanity, this is probably it. It may well take years or it might just be months, who knows. There are 7 billion people in the world, and there are more dog lovers than haters, therefore, I am positive that this change can happen. But to make the change happen, I am going to need about 3 billion signatures. That's the reality. If it helps to make you understand why I am doing this, try and truly imagine what it must be like to be continuously tied up outside, truly freezing cold, or far too hot, starving or injured without care or attention. Or skinned and boiled alive. The stories, and the facts are out there, don't be blind to it all.
