Poultry giant Mountaire’s alleged worker abuses keep mounting as the company keeps growing, moving up from the 6th to the 4th largest producer in the country this past year. Meanwhile, ALDI remains silent about the exploitative behavior of its poultry supplier. In July, a shocking investigation in Scalawag Magazine revealed that poultry companies like Mountaire are apparently using a third-party contractor to hire undocumented workers, who are primarily people of color, in order to pay them less and deprive them of adequate time off if they are infected with COVID-19—which is running rampant in the plants’ crowded, dangerous working conditions.
Further, the company is now facing a complaint in North Carolina, where the North Carolina Justice Center has alleged that workers are falling ill with breathing problems, diarrhea, headaches, and eye issues because of extremely high levels of chemicals like bleach and ammonia. According to an anonymous Mountaire worker, “When we complain, they ignore us … The voice of Hispanics is not valid, as if we were not human beings. I have filed many complaints and nobody does anything. They don’t protect us. They don’t care how employees feel.”
But Mountaire’s profits are skyrocketing off these workers’ backs, and its customer ALDI’s shelves are lined with deceptively labeled “One Health Certified” chicken, meant to humanewashing, greenwash, and healthwash Mountaire’s sordid track record.
