Move the Chicago Gay Pride Parade from Boystown to Downtown

Move the Chicago Gay Pride Parade from Boystown to Downtown
The Issue
Now that Chicago’s parade attracts over a million people, it only makes sense that a larger venue is needed as Boystown can no longer contain it. Michigan Ave. or Columbus Dr. would be better venue choices as it would give the LGBT community more exposure, larger awareness and of course it would be more centrally located and accessible by every Chicagoland resident via CTA and METRA. Not to mention the hotel accommodations.
Do not misinterpret this petition, I understand there are small businesses that look forward to this parade in that area. But having a parade in another location will not keep people from coming to Boystown afterwards--as everyone used to drinking during this event--will be looking to do so after. In fact, because there are no bars or house parties around--the insubordination and insane crowds will be close to non-existent. I feel this could be good for those businesses as it would allow owners to create a better atmosphere and allow for more safety precautions, not to mention there's still Pride Fest--which has grown in popularity. Also, we should take in to consideration of sharing that wealth with the gay owned/friendly establishments that are in downtown.
But why Downtown? Well, safety is why. Chicago takes downtown safety seriously with tourists, attractions and keeping up with appearances...this could only work in our favor with the amount of people that attend. Emergency escape routes would be better utilized, more Police Officers can be dispatched, etc.
What the gay community needs to understand is we have been fighting for equality, inclusiveness and integration. Now that we clearly have it in Chicago--why not SHARE? Why not let other sections of the city help celebrate with us? This is not the time to be selfish and greedy--this could actually help the city we call home--the city that has encouraged us to do what we already do with this event. This is an opportunity to allow different demographics to see what we are PROUD OF and join us. I feel if this change happened--the City of Chicago could actually go through a beautification process of decorating city streets, window changes for businesses, hotels, etc. The list goes on and on. We could even look at a major celebration in Grant Park.
Why not try it out for ONE YEAR? If it does not work--move it back. But don't you want to at least try and be proud of our community AND OUR CITY?
