Albania has a huge caged bear problem. Over 90 bears are illegally kept in appalling conditions in tiny cages across the country to attract customers to hotels, resorts, restaurants and petrol stations. 5 bears including young cubs are currently being touted around the coastal resorts for lucrative photo ops with tourists. The keeping of brown bears by private owners is forbidden in Albania yet the government do not prosecute people breaking the law or confiscate illegally kept bears, despite being in full knowledge of where these bears are and who owns them. Many of these bears are in cages that are easily accessed by members of the public, and many owners indeed encourage their guests to hand feed the bears, this is not only potentially hazardous for the bear it is highly dangerous for people. We call for the Albanian government to act swiftly to end private bear keeping, to immediately commence the construction of a bear sanctuary and initiate a plan for the gradual confiscation of all bears being held in unacceptable illegal conditions across Albania.
