Save Lum Elementary
The Issue
At a public meeting at Lum on April 26, AUSD Superintendent Sean McPhetridge informed the Lum community that recent soil testing at our school revealed that a significant seismic event (a very major earthquake) might result in damage to the school as a result of liquefaction. The Superintendent is recommending to the Board of Education that Lum be closed as of the end of this school year and that all Lum students and staff be relocated to multiple Alameda elementary schools. The Board will then make a decision at the May 9th meeting. We urge the Board of Education to slow down this process and to take the time to make plans that allow our students to remain at Lum. Take the time to make a plan that isn’t just a knee-jerk reaction, but allows for flexible and creative solutions. Take the next 6 months to send professionals to the drawing board so they can come up with an approach that will not tear apart and destroy our community, and addresses structural issues over time rather than all at once.
