Your signed resolutions and petitions (https://change.org/alcoredistricting have built a strong base for our effort, and we are grateful to partner with you in this work. Over 600 people have signed the petition, and more than 30 organizations/jurisdictions have signed the resolution.
On April 20, 2021, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors voted to draw the district lines themselves, while downplaying the importance of redistricting. On the upside, County Staff is evaluating hiring an independent consultant and creating an outreach plan. Meanwhile, it’s time for all of us to get to work.
One of the most important components of fair redistricting is identifying communities of interest (COI). For example, geographic boundaries, shared resources, common struggles, and similar backgrounds tie neighborhoods and communities together. People who are part of these “communities of interest” have the most important role in redistricting — identifying the boundaries of their communities. This role gives every community a chance to be heard and to determine how we want to be represented for the next 10 years.
This is where you come in. The concept of COI is unfamiliar to most people. Trusted messengers like you can help educate people and activate them to get involved. EVERYONE living in Alameda county and interested in fair representation is encouraged to get involved. All the residents regardless of their immigration status have a chance to be heard in redistricting.
