Please add your voice to the conversation! Key talking points, are offered here. One or two of which can be added to your own story of why redistricting matters to you:
Regardless of the decision making structure, hire a consultant with a firm track record of following community priorities in developing the maps. Have a public hearing regarding the potential consultant before they are hired.
We support an independent redistricting commission (option 2 in the staff report). If that is not possible this year, than option 3, a hybrid redistricting commission would be a great step in the right direction.
Online platforms and kiosks will help facilitate engagement to ensure that community participation more akin to census engagement than 2011 redistricting engagement. Use metrics to measure participation and engage trusted messengers in areas that are underrepresented.
Outreach must start as soon as possible.
Engagement and outreach must also include what redistricting is and why it matters. Partner with State Redistricting outreach efforts so that they County does not have carry this effort alone. Use Alameda County and City Library systems as outreach and education partners.
Use faith and non-profits as partners to reach underrepresented communities in multiple languages with a consistent message and easy opportunities to contribute.
Follow the state laws regarding the priorities for drawing the lines. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1J1gNsUR1VwD7MhUhVc7CNsQx5remgm6CvfLlg_OVifM/edit?usp=sharing
We are looking for a Fair And Independent Redistricting process in 2021 and the budget allocation to make that happen.
