Petition updateGrant Syrian Refugee and Ottawa Resident Dima Siam Permanent Residency in CanadaNational Call-in Day for Dima Siam June 7: Syrian Refugee Punished for Being Pregnant

Syrian Refugee Dima Siam in Ottawa must remain under deportation order to Syria for at least another 9 months simply because she is pregnant. It started out as a cold-hearted rejection by the Harper government, a deportation order to Syria based on a simple, honest paperwork error that was corrected during a sponsorship application. Will the Trudeau government intervene to finally resolve the suffering limbo experienced by Dima Siam, an Ottawa-based, pregnant Syrian refugee? All she is asking for is the same permanent resident status that has been granted to over 25,000 other Syrian refugees. But she's been told she must wait an additional 9 months for Ottawa to consider her humanitarian and compassionate application because she cannot take x-rays while pregnant. Another 9 months of living under threat of deportation to Syria. This would not have even been an issue if the government had not made the error of wrongly issuing Dima a pre-removal risk assessment (PRRA) and then forcing her to wait a full year before declaring they were in error. In large part because of our public pressure campaign, the government has offered (but still not given) Dima a temporary resident permit (TRP), but this only extends her limbo, and that of her husband and 3 kids. Without a TRP, she has no access to OHIP (health insurance) while pregnant. We are calling on Minister John McCallum to immediately consider her file, grant her "conditional permanent residency" (pending the outcome of the X-ray), and end this family's suffering. This Tuesday, June 7th marks the close of a 3-week chain fast in solidarity with Dima Siam, in which some 40 people across the country have been fasting to draw attention to the injustice of this case. It also marks the beginning of Ramadan. June 7th is also the same day Dima must report to the Canadian Border Services Agency as part of the conditions of her deportation order – definitely not the best way to congratulate her for the beginning of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan. We are asking people to call in to John McCallum's office (613-996-3374 or 905-479-8100) that day with a simple message: "Grant Dima Siam conditional permanent residency" immediately, and full permanent residence status upon the birth of her child and the completion of the required Xray (which she could have done 16 months ago, before being pregnant, if the government had not made the error of issuing her a PRRA!) Please let us know at tasc@web.ca that you called and of any responses you received. Thanks for your support.
