No One Left Behind

Over 1,000 SIV applicants still in Afghanistan and Iraq signed this petition to President-Elect Biden.  All included their National Visa Center, Embassy, or IOM case number.  The average time waiting for a visa was over 3.5 years.  The Washington Post covered this story.  Here is the petition:

Dear President-Elect Biden and Vice President-Elect Harris,

We write today begging you to keep America’s promise to her faithful allies (Interpreters). Many of them risked everything to work with U.S Armed Forces in our countries (Afghanistan and Iraq) because we believe in America and its values. Because of this, we have been threatened and targeted by the Taliban and ISIS in Afghanistan and Iranian Militias and ISIS in Iraq. The Shia Militias recently came out with a bounty and different prices for information that leads to Iraqi interpreters who helped the US Government in Iraq and their families.

All these groups call us traitors for standing shoulder-to-shoulder with American Forces. Many of our friends and families have been killed because of working with U.S Armed Forces.

Our Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) cases usually take years and sometimes are denied without any explanation. We must pay for our own health screening which force us to sell our own properties or get a loan to pay for medical expenses. Often we are asked to do the health screening multiple times which is almost impossible. We are trying to navigate a bureaucratic nightmare while being hunted day and night.

The undersigned have provided at least 24 months of faithful and valuable service as stated by the laws governing the Special Immigrant Visa program. We are aware of the U.S. District Court of Washington D.C.’s ruling that the Department of State comply with its 9-month assessment timeline.

Over 154,000 people have signed this Change.org petition and our struggle is well documented in your media: https://www.change.org/p/afghan-iraqi-translators-saved-american-lives-tell-congress-to-recognize-them-as-heroes
