2-D mammography, the former standard, remains vulnerable and limited as it cannot reliably scan through denser breast tissue.  3-D mammography, currently recommended by doctors as the best technology for early breast cancer detection, is not currently covered by most insurance companies.  Women who cannot afford the out-of-pocket costs of 3-D mammograms are forced into higher-risk choices.  At the rate of one in eight women who develop breast cancer, the cost of covered 3-D mammograms is considerably less than the costs of later-stage cancer treatments.  Covered 3-D mammograms should be a standard of preventative care.
