More on Nithya Raman: 

Raman actively worked to have restriction on gay cruising in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles removed.  In a part of that area signs restricting turns (e.g. no left turn after 6 p.m.) were set up to contravene LGBT cruising.  Raman correctly recognized this as abusive to the community and had the signs and restrictions removed. She also publicized this and celebrated after the removal of the signs. 

It is hard to find politicians who will support gay sexual life, especially when many gay men are ashamed of their sexual needs and sometimes do not fully understand themselves the centrality of sexual settings to gay existence and to the mental health of gay men and other members of the LGBT community.
