Humane Treatment of Animals in Shelters and Stores

Dear Reader,

I am a sixth grader, and I am writing to tell you about the problems about our pet stores, animal shelters, and animal control centers. In shelters, the maximum time for a dog to be kept before euthanization is 72 hours to 4 days. That number is even less if the dog is a stray, doesn't have proper identification, or is not purebred. Think about it. If your pet ran away and was taken to a shelter, you would have a maximum of 4 days to find it before you never will see it again. In the USA, there are about 7.6 million animals that go to shelters. Of those animals, 2.7 million are euthanized. I suggest extending the holding time to a week to 10 days. That will give slightly more time for pet owners to find their beloved pets, and for stray pets to be adopted into their new forever homes. I hope that, after you read this, you will join me in my cause to save more innocent animals who won't be killed for lack of money each year. Thank you.
