ACS is pushing the closure of the only group residence for 25 foster care youth, both male and female, who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning. The residents in the house have, in the past, experienced some sexual, physical, finicial and otherwise abuse while living at some of the locations within the Green Chimneys' NYC Division. The Gramercy Residence at Ungar House is a four story building in Manhattan's Gramercy neighborhood that is home to 13 youth ages 16 to 20. The house has the capability to hold 25 youth. The services within the program and detailed specifically to help the LGBTQ population in foster care and is one of the only programs where foster care youth in that community are guaranteed acceptance on every level. The level of support of the staff is astonishing and indifferent of any contrasts. The NYC Division also includes an Agency Operated Boarding Home in Harlem that is home to 6 females who identify as lesbian, bisexual or who are transitioning into being a male. The AOBH program offers a more indivualized care and both programs require that the residents who live with them partake in a vocational and/or educational program. Both programs are known to help the majority of its residents. Some former residents have made complaints about some of the mistreatment they have faced in the house. Green Chimneys' administration, located in upstate NY, took care of the program by creating a whole new management team in many locations. The positions created and/or shifted were : Residential Director, Residental Supervisor, Education Coordinator, Recreation Coordinator, Life Skills Coordinator, Clinical Director, and so on. The youth in the household have expressed their realization of the immediate beneficial change of the program that they have called home for some years. Some residents have maintained a happy life in Green Chimneys for five years. This is home to them.
