The next court date for illegally captured elephant calves and the illegal owners who possessed forged documents is on June 9, as referenced previously. The illegal owners are profiting from the tourism associated with cultural and religious ceremonies in addition to corporate and social activities. For example, the baby elephants are used in pageants and events in Sri Lanka, culminating with the Kandy Esala Perahera in July. This is perhaps the most popular attraction and draws a large number of tourists to Sri Lanka annually. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kandy_Esala_Perahera Here is a update on the magistrate Thilina Gamage. He fled and went into hiding instead of making a required court appearance for the illegally captured elephant calf at his residence. http://www.lankaenews.com/news/1372/en This follow up article indicates that Gamage is eligible for arrest. Yet a friend magistrate named Kanishka Wijeratne is planning to hear the case against Gamage. http://lankaenews.com/news/1380/en/e And Gamage is out on bail: http://newsfirst.lk/english/2016/06/thilina-gamage/138083 This is an article about how the government of Sri Lanka wants to grow the tourism sector. They are puzzled why other countries in the region such a Malaysia and Singapore have quickly surpassed them. http://www.ft.lk/article/544611/PM-toasts-tourism WHAT WE CAN DO: Since tourism is important to them, please comment and post videos of elephant abuse and slavery on the tourism websites and facebook pages. You will likely have to comment on an existing post. https://m.facebook.com/search/top/?q=Sri+Lanka+tourism https://m.facebook.com/srilankatourism50thanniversary/?fref=nf https://m.facebook.com/srilankatourism50thanniversary/?fref=nf#!/tourismsrilanka.gov.lk/?tsid=0.6515837035633427&source=typeahead Thank you for continuing to shine a light on the corruption and elephant abuse in Sri Lanka.
