The Issue

As someone deeply passionate about correcting the misgendering of animal species, I cringe every time I hear about male "ladybugs". This name is not gender-appropriate and could contribute to the misunderstanding of our natural world. Ladybugs, known scientifically as Coccinellidae, are a family of beetles. There is no significant distinction between males and females in terms of appearance, only their reproductive structures vary (source: Encyclopedia Britannica). However, continuing to refer to the males as 'ladies' causes unnecessary confusion and may constitute a subtle form of misgendering. It's time we shift towards more gender-appropriate nomenclature for these creatures. Their name should reflect the reality of their biology, not outdated societal norms. Let's start a dialogue to rename the male ladybugs in a way that respects their biological gender. Your signature can be an important step towards acknowledging the gender insensitivity grounded in our language system. Please, sign this petition!
