Address the unfair grading of the recent exam
Address the unfair grading of the recent exam
The Issue
As a dedicated student who has consistently put in hours of study and preparation, I recently encountered a challenging situation that was not only unexpected but also felt profoundly unfair. The recent exam we took was disproportionately difficult compared to previous years and what had been outlined in our course material. It left many of us, regardless of our varying strengths, struggling to keep up and feeling disheartened about our academic future.
This is not just about one difficult exam; it's about fairness and the right to be assessed by realistic and consistent standards. Our course guidelines provided a framework that many of us relied on to prepare adequately. The abrupt shift in difficulty level has impacted not only our grades but also our morale and confidence.
To provide some context, numerous students have raised similar concerns. On platforms like course-specific forums and social media, discussions are rampant with students sharing their experiences and frustrations. Some notable points include that the exam covered topics not previously discussed in lectures, and time constraints were unrealistic given the complexity of the problems presented.
We believe our institution maintains a high academic standard, which is precisely why we feel a dialogue needs to commence regarding this particular exam. Therefore, we are urging the department to consider the following solutions: reevaluation of the grading scale for this paper to provide fair compensation, offering supplementary grading options such as additional credit assignments, or a substantial review of the exam content to align with expected learning outcomes.
Fair assessment is crucial for academic growth and integrity. We ask the educational department to engage with students and take corrective measures. By signing this petition, you are supporting a cause that advocates for equitable education and acknowledges student voices in determining fair academic practices. Please sign and make a difference in ensuring that our academic journey is just and encouraging.
