The situational analysis, the report we prepared based on interviews with acid attack survivors throughout Uganda, is complete! You can read it here. Thank you to everyone who donated to help make this research possible!
Now that the report is complete, our Ugandan legal team led by Arnold Agaba & Sibongile Phiri, can complete the last phase of this process, which is meeting with ministries and members of parliament. As Arnold explained to us, the Ministries of Trade, Health, and Justice are the most relevant given the law we are proposing relates to these ministries most. Official letters have been sent to these Ministries requesting meetings. Arnold and Sibo will also request meetings with specific members of parliament. We will let you know as soon as our Ugandan team has been able to secure meetings. (We are hoping this will happen in the month of July.)
The goal of these meetings is to identify a ministry or member of parliament who will officially take the proposed law to the larger parliament. If they are able to secure the needed meetings in July, we are hoping that by the end of August, we will have a commitment from a ministry or member of parliament that they intend to bring the proposed law to parliament. Arnold has told us that members of the ministries were at the launch in April and based on their reactions at that time, are expected to be receptive to the proposed law.
We will keep you updated!
