As the world becomes more aware of the importance and influence of diversity, equality and inclusion I can slowly feel my heritage slip away in the media. My whole life I feel as if I have lost a little bit of my culture every time I have been forced to check WHITE as my race in school, the workplace and beyond. As an OLIVE/Mediterranean skinned person (of Italian decent) who is first generation American I feel like being able to identify as OLIVE/Mediterranean helps more encompass my lived experience in America having kept many aspects of my family's culture, food, language and other traditions of heritage that differ from the lived WHITE experience and history. I feel as if the struggle my family endured to become American is forgotten by choosing WHITE when identifying my race. I ask all of you who agree to join me in this small but incredibly important amendment to the way we categorize race in surveys and live as multi-cultured Americans.
