So remember last week when I said we had 2 more steps?
We have still have 2 more steps. A quick lesson in legislation: everything can change and there are no rules.
On May 2, 2023 our bill passed unanimously on the Senate Floor. Yay - this is it right? Wrong. But don't dismay, it's just another hoop. Our bill was amended onto SB 1430 and HB 1537, as you read in our last update. Well, guess what? Each time there is an amendment to a bill it has to go back for a vote.
SB 1430 / HB 1537 are supposed to be identical bills that pass through both chambers. We already passed through the House last week and yesterday through the Senate. However, SB 1430 had amendments added within the past week that changed the language of the bill. These amendments have nothing to do with the AAPI history inclusion, but because they have been added on, need to go back through the House floor.
Are you following? Trust me, I know! I sat through committees this session that talked about amendments to the amendments. I thought I was on a sitcom.
Essentially now that the bill has new language, it needs to go back to the House floor for a FINAL VOTE. Hopefully the final, final vote!
And then?
And then it goes to the Governors desk for signing! That's the plan anyway.
Stay tuned for more and continue to follow us on social media: MUVFL for updates or ME (if you want to see some random kung fu and shenanigans at the Capitol). All work and no play is no bueno. I have to keep my sanity somehow!
Hopefully my next update will be with some real news!
Thanks,
Mimi
