Delay Construction of Gallegly Center in CLU's Library

The purpose of this petition is to delay the construction of the Gallegly Center and to further inform the student body about the current plans and principles of and for the Gallegly Center. We do not agree that construction for this center will be held during school hours, a few weeks prior to finals week, a time where many students go to the library for a silent study space. Construction would interrupt students’ studies. Though the construction company “promises” a soundproof wall during time of construction, there is no guarantee.

More importantly, after researching Elton Gallegly, we do not support his legislature and believe it contradicts what Cal Lutheran stands for. As a Evangelical Lutheran Church of America affiliated university, our mission statement is “to educate leaders for a global society who are strong in character and judgment, confident in their identity and vocation and committed to service and justice”. This Center serves as a monument to Mr. Gallegly’s service, one in which he targeted the identities shared by many of our students, people of color- particularly Hispanics, the LGBTQ community, and immigrants to this country. Lastly, if the construction plan proceeds during the summer, we do not feel a replica of the U.S. Representative’s office will be an appropriate study area that can be used by all students due to the obvious bias this Center would emanate. Therefore, we petition for a delay in construction until more information is presented to students.
