Abraham Darby Academy, in Madeley, wants to change its name to Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby.

They want the name of the Haberdashers’ Company, an ancient merchant guild of London, to be prominent & therefore before the name of Abraham Darby, this is an insult to the Memory of Abraham Darby, the man who built the First Cast Iron Bridge in the World, the School was named after Abraham Darby, to honour his name, this Prominent Iron Master, has earned the right to have his name immortalised in our Shropshire School, since when does the Sponsorship of a London Based Company, give them the right, to have their name, attached to that of a local Icon such as Abraham Darby & for them to have the name of their Company before that of this Great Man," The increased prominence of their name is wholly inappropriate.”
