Petition updateAbolish the caste system at Cannes Film Festival

Cannes's badge system remains the same this year. So does the need to change.

The Color of Cannes
20 May 2018
This year’s Cannes Film Festival is just over. However, despite its small improvements such as adding additional screenings, the condition remained the same: people with lower badges had to waste a lot of time for a screening. The master class with Christopher Nolan reached a high point, as hundreds of people lining for hours in cramped stairs and hallways with no hope to get in. You can imagine how people feel. People wondered why Cannes couldn’t just put a stop sign somewhere in the line and tell the rest to stop wasting their time. The answer is caste system: since Cannes’s staffs have to guarantee seats for higher-badge critics, who usually come in the last minute, they can’t tell how many seats are available until right before the screening. Not to mention Cannes still left under-utilized rooms empty while keeping critics out in the hot sun or rain. It is the shame that Cannes tried to brand itself as socially progressive this year, while maintaining an unjust caste system that creates bad working conditions. Cannes needs to change. Thanks to your support, we are building up the momentum, as more and more people in the festival have started talking and thinking about change. Please continue to help sharing the petitions so that more pressure will be put on Cannes to abolish the caste system!
