Abolish daylight saving time in the UK

Abolish daylight saving time in the UK

The Issue

Daylight Saving Time (DST) has been a part of our lives for decades, but for me, it has always felt like an unnecessary disruption. The initial idea behind DST was to save energy and make better use of daylight. However, in today’s world, where our schedules are dictated more by electronics than daylight, the need for DST is questionable. I truly believe it's an outdated practice that no longer serves our wellbeing.

Studies have shown that the disruption caused by changing clocks can have significant impacts on our health. According to research published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, the transition into DST results in sleep deprivation, which can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The circadian rhythm disruption can also lead to mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression.

Economically, the benefits of DST have also been brought into question. The anticipated energy savings are marginal at best in an era dominated by energy-efficient technologies. Additionally, the clock change can create confusion in international business, leading to potential economic inefficiencies.

In the UK, the act of changing clocks is not only a nuisance but an outdated tradition that does not align with modern living. The European Union has already voted to discontinue DST in its member states, recognizing the lack of substantial benefits. It's time for the UK to follow suit.

By abolishing Daylight Saving Time, we can simplify our lives, improve public health, and align our routines with the modern world's demands.

In layman’s terms - we don’t get enough light in the winter as it is so why would we want a 5pm sunset to become 4pm smh. Even if we didn’t scrap it - we should at least be reversing the order we do it in for it to benefit most people.
