Abolish Columbus Day

Abolish Columbus Day

The Issue

We want to abolish Columbus Day because we should not honor a person that is unworthy. We're students at Capital City Public Charter School, and we want to see this day abolished. Christopher Columbus wasn't the first to discover America. In fact, he landed in an area already populated by Native Americans. His actions such as committing genocide, rape and torture are not worthy of an honor. The DC Council should change the name from Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day to honor the many contributions Native Americans have made in this country. #AbolishColumbusDay
