Integrity in Breastfeeding & Lactation
16 nov 2017
Why is it so serious that Nestle organized a live-streamed conference at which such prominent breastfeeding and human milk researchers spoke? Isn't Nestle's wrongdoing a thing of the past? It is true that the International of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes was triggered in large part by the egregious marketing of infant formula in the developing world in the 1970s, which is almost 50 years ago now. Despite the adoption of comprehensive Code legislation in 39 and some Code provisions in 135 countries (http://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/10665/206008/1/9789241565325_eng.pdf), Nestle continues its predatory marketing practices, including the organization of meetings such the one in question. The latest WHA resolutions (69.9) specifically call for an end to this practice as a conflict. http://apps.who.int/gb/ebwha/pdf_files/WHA69/A69_R9-en.pdf Interested in more history?
