This is a big moment in our fight: the Daily Telegraph has joined our campaign calling for a Royal Commission into Veterans suicide rates. My son David Stafford Finney was on the front page of their paper. Inside, the newspaper had this to say:

The Daily Telegraph joins the call by the mother of retired Royal Australian Naval officer Dave Finney — who took his life earlier this year — for a national Royal Commission into a silent wave of deaths.

The PM and the Veterans Affairs Minister now cannot ignore our calls for a Royal Commission, but the PM is yet to agree to one. His office issued this response to the Daily Telegraph:

The Prime Minister has called for urgent briefings from the Department of Veterans Affairs and officials in response to the devastating accounts of our veterans taking their own lives.

We recognise the seriousness of the problem and appreciate the candour and the work that has been done to ensure these issues are being raised.

Ahead of the release of the final Productivity Commission report into DVA’s rehab and compensation system, the PM will consider all options to ensure our veterans receive the utmost support and care.

Friends, we need to show the PM and the Veterans Affairs Minister that this is an issue we all care about.
