A Petition for MUN to Withdraw the Complaint against Matt Barter and Commit to Freedom of Expression on Campus

Memorial University of Newfoundland has decided to weaponize the Student Code of Conduct against student journalist and activist Matt Barter for criticizing the senior administration.

On December 7th, 2021, MUN officially issued their complaint in a formal letter. As a result, I have been banned from campus and put under investigation. They also stated that the interim measures, including the ban, will remain in effect until the resolution of the complaint.

President Vianne Timmons and her office have not replied to my proposal to sit down in good faith and have a conversation to discuss their leadership and free speech policies. This is evident that Timmons is not willing to argue for her actions but instead just censor criticism.

This petition demands that MUN withdraw the complaint immediately and commit to freedom of expression on campus.
