A Mother’s Plea: Demand Justice for Christopher Lamon Handy – Wrongfully Convicted in Arizona
My name is Cynthia Herson, and I am the mother of Christopher Lamon Handy. In 2019, my son was wrongfully convicted in Pinal County, Arizona, and sentenced to 16 years in prison for crimes he did not commit. Christopher had no prior conviction history. His conviction is based on prosecutorial misconduct, ineffective assistance of counsel, and a case filled with constitutional violations. I am fighting for his freedom—and I need your help.
Christopher was convicted under Arizona case number CR201900100. He was charged with multiple offenses including attempted second-degree murder, but the evidence simply doesn’t support the verdict.
Here’s what the prosecution and the system got wrong:
The alleged victim was not hospitalized for 3 days as claimed to the jury. Medical records show he was treated and discharged within 36 hours—yet the prosecutor exaggerated this to influence the jury.
How can you shoot someone in the back of the head when all the witness said they were facing each other? How did the wound end up being a through and through if I am right-handed and the laceration was in the back of his head on the right side
Visibility at the time of the alleged incident was extremely poor, yet the claim that they saw Christopher holding a weapon was accepted as fact.
Christopher was double charged: they charged him with attempted murder and also with shooting into a residential structure, for the same bullet allegedly aimed at a person—not a building.
His defense attorney failed to raise key objections to the statement made at trial to the sworn statement before trial and failed to call critical witnesses.
The cruel and unusual punishment of being strapped for 8 days with a stun vest.
These are clear examples of:
Due process violations
Double jeopardy under the Fifth Amendment
Cruel and unusual punishment under the Eighth Amendment
Ineffective assistance of counsel (Strickland v. Washington)
Prosecutorial misconduct
We are calling on:
The Arizona Governor, Katie Hobbs
The Arizona Board of Executive Clemency
The Conviction Integrity Unit (Prosecution Integrity Program)
All media outlets and civil rights organizations
to investigate and intervene in Christopher’s case.
Christopher is not a danger to society. He was in excellent health before he landed in prison. Now, he is a diabetic, in declining health, and has now spent more than six years behind bars for a crime he did not commit. His case deserves review. His life deserves a second chance.
