Melquíades Álvarez es un nadador que en 2008 participó en los Juegos Olímpicos de Beijing, en 2010 consiguió una medalla de plata en los Campeonatos de Europa y es plusmarquista nacional en 100m y 200m braza. Y en 2011, cuando llevaba 3 años preparándose para los juegos Olímpicos de Londres, le diagnosticaron un síndrome Parsonage-Turner, una enfermedad que afecta a 1,5 personas de cada 100.000 y que le impidió llegar a estos juegos.

Despues de casi dos años recuperándose, hace una semana Melquiades Alvarez consiguió hacer la mínima exigida por la Federación para participar en el Mundial de Natación que se celebrará en Barcelona este Agosto, lo cual es practicamente un milagro. Pero en lugar de hacerla en el Open de España, la hizo en el Mare Nostrum, un mes más tarde.

Sin embargo, Melquiades Alvarez no será seleccionado para el Mundial de Barcelona. El Director de Alto Rendimiento de la RFEN, José Antonio del Castillo, descarta convocar al bracista pese a que éste consiguió la pasada semana en el Ciutat de Barcelona la mínima en 200 braza. El presidente de la federación, Fernando Carpena, aseguró anteayer a Natacción que la RFEN no contemplaba seleccionar al actual plusmarquista nacional de 100 y 200 braza, de 24 años. Del Castillo lo ratificó ayer.

La decisión de la RFEN supone un duro golpe para Melquíades, que ha salido del infierno de una enfermedad que ha estado a punto de retirarle prematuramente. Sin embargo, el explusmarquista europeo de 200 braza se ha recuperado a tiempo para firmar la mínima marcada cuando falta más de un mes para el Mundial. De nada le servirá. El área técnica de la RFEN no piensa repescar a Álvarez pese a que los Criterios Generales de selección sí dan esta opción en caso de que Del Castillo lo considere beneficioso para el equipo nacional.

Las circunstancias que rodean el caso de Melquíades, cuya marca de 2:11.85 podría valer una semifinal mundial, no son tomadas en cuenta por la RFEN, que alimenta una nueva controversia. Del Castillo asegura que respeta los criterios marcados por el anterior director técnico de la entidad, Luis Villanueva. Sin embargo, Villanueva sí convocó a Alan Cabello para el Europeo de Budapest 2010 tres meses después del Open de España, cuando la RFEN establece que se deben lograr las mínimas. Es decir, ya hay un precedente.

Y yo me pregunto ¿Ya hay otros nadadores en la categoría de 200m braza que puedan hacerlo mejor que Melquiades? Lo cierto es que la Federación no ha convocado a ningún nadador para dicha prueba en la que contamos con un plusmarquista dispuesto a luchar.

Melquiades es todo un símbolo. Nuestros nadadores reciben un apoyo muy limitado por parte de su propia Federación que no se preocupa de que adquieran la suficiente experiencia en competiciones internacionales o incluso nacionales y que les exige mínimas que ni siquiera exige la FINA. Este chico debería ir a los mundiales de Natacion porque es una de las pocas figuras de la natacion que tenemos y que tambien representan qué es España. Y porque él nos enseña que incluso luchando contra nuestra propia naturaleza debemos seguir intentándolo y lo conseguiremos. No puede ser que Melquiades haya vencido a su enfermedad y la burocracia sea la que limite sus posibilidades.

Melquiades should go to the World Championships in Barcelona this summer because he is one of the few outstanding swimmers we have, he has achieved the minimum against all odds and he also represents Spain. And because he teaches us that even struggling against our own nature we must keep trying and might succeed. Melquiades has overcome his illness and it is unbelievable that his own Federation will be the only obstacle for him to keep on fighting. Please sign.
