Yesterday, Imran Khan's admirable speech had all the ingredients required for a fanfare. It was the kind of antidote the world needs to combat Islamophobia. Unfortunately, the speech was too light on the important details required on the tragedy unfolding in Kashmir. It was weak on international relations theory which should have been set down to force the international community into acting. Imran Khan made no mention of the international community and its failure to adhere to the UN Responsibility to Protect agreement to protect from Genocide and Human Rights Abuses.
The culmination of the UNGA meeting is very disappointing for Kashmir.
1. There was no UNGA resolution set down on Kashmir. Pakistan has given no reason.
2. There is still no Human Rights Council resolution for Kashmir. Therefore no vote was taken for a full inquiry.
3. Pakistan in their wisdom of supporting Saudi Arabia decided to vote NO at a vote on a Human Rights Council vote on Yemen. This in turn will alienate the international community and the support for Kashmir will not be there.
4. The neglect of Kashmir on the Responsibility to Protect agenda has not been corrected by Pakistan. This means Kashmir still remains low on the agenda.
5. At present there doesn't seem to be any moves to either the ICJ for Kashmir given the legal advice in Pakistan is negative.
Unfortunately, I would say this was a practical diplomatic failure for Pakistan. The only aspect achieved is additional fame for its leader and further awareness for Kashmir. Awareness though doesn't equate to action.
It seems that the success achieved by the petitioners www.kashmirhumanrights.com will not be carried forward to achieve practical benefits for Kashmir on ground zero. One has to apologize to Kashmir for the lack of practical assistance for them yet again. Unfortunately, the net result will be more lives lost.
