A Cleaner and Safer Cogon Market: Improving Sanitation and Public Spaces for Kagay-anons
The Issue
As a SHS student who commutes and often go at the Cogon area, I observed loads of issues circulating in that place. This place is one of the crowded places of Cagayan de Oro City because of its cheaper prices of our basic necessities such as raw meat, fresh fishes, vegetables, and other perishable goods, or generally, basic goods.
Cogon Market is an essential part of our community. It provides food, services, and livelihoods for many vendors and workers. Therefore, it is expected to be populated—cleanliness and convenience could be an issue.
With the large number of people, vendors, and food activities in the area, maintaining cleanliness, food safety, and accessible public spaces is significant for everyone.
I, as someone who has interest in photography, these photographs can help through showing everyday activities in Cogon Market, including crowded streets and local food vendors preparing their products. These scenes highlight the need for continued attention to sanitation, waste management, food preparation, and pedestrian spaces.
We respectfully ask for:
- More accessible garbage and waste-disposal facilities
- Regular cleaning and sanitation of market areas
- Clean water and suitable facilities for food preparation
- Clear and accessible pedestrian pathways
- Organized spaces for vendors that still allow shoppers to move safely
- Improvements that support both market cleanliness and the livelihoods of local vendors
A cleaner and more organized market can create a safer and more comfortable environment for shoppers, vendors, and workers while helping preserve the local food traditions that make the market part of our community.
