CAN GHANA AFFORD TO PRIORITIZE ARABIC AND CHINESE WHILE MANY GHANAIAN CHILDREN STILL STRUGGLE TO READ?

Ghana’s education system is already facing a major challenge. Many children struggle to fully understand what they are taught because the language of instruction is often different from the language they speak and understand best at home. This has contributed to a culture of memorization rather than deep understanding, where many students learn to pass examinations instead of developing true comprehension and problem-solving abilities.
Despite these challenges, Ghana is set to introduce Arabic language education into the basic education system from 2027. At a time when students are already navigating English, French, and Ghanaian languages alongside numerous academic subjects, many are asking: is adding another language at this stage the most urgent priority? In an era driven by technology, artificial intelligence, and innovation, should our first focus not be strengthening literacy, comprehension, critical thinking, and future-ready skills for every Ghanaian child?
