A call for a more LGBTQIA-Inclusive Lourdes College
The Issue
Every student deserves a school environment where they can learn, participate, and grow with dignity, safety, and respect. LGBTQIA+ students are an important part of our school community, yet creating an inclusive environment requires more than simply recognizing their presence. It means fostering a culture where students are not made to feel excluded, ridiculed, or less deserving of respect because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
In any school community, students may encounter challenges such as bullying, harmful stereotypes, discrimination, or uncertainty about where to seek support when they experience these situations. These experiences can affect a student’s sense of belonging and their willingness to participate fully in school life. While these concerns may not always be immediately visible, they are worth acknowledging and addressing as part of our continuous effort to create a safer and more welcoming campus.
We are calling on our school community to take meaningful steps toward strengthening LGBTQIA+ inclusion. This can begin by promoting clearer protections against bullying and discrimination, providing accessible avenues for students to seek support, encouraging respectful and informed conversations about LGBTQIA+ experiences, and ensuring that students are given equal opportunities to participate in school organizations, activities, leadership, and other aspects of campus life. By encouraging understanding and reviewing practices that may unintentionally exclude students, our school can continue developing an environment where everyone has the opportunity to feel that they belong.
Creating a more inclusive school does not mean that everyone must share the same beliefs or opinions. Rather, it means recognizing that differences exist while maintaining a shared commitment to dignity and respect. Inclusion allows students to learn from one another, participate without fear of discrimination, and contribute to a community that values each of its members.
Change also begins with us. We can contribute by listening to the experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals, educating ourselves, challenging harmful stereotypes, treating others with respect, and speaking up when we witness bullying or discrimination. You do not have to be LGBTQIA+ to support an inclusive school. Every member of the community has a role in creating an environment where people are treated with fairness and dignity.
Through this petition, we invite the Lourdes College community to support the call for a more inclusive campus. By signing and sharing this petition, you can help encourage meaningful conversations about acceptance, respect, safety, and belonging. Together, we can work toward a school community where every student can feel seen, heard, and respected.
