Project Implications

The Coastal Road will have numerous disastrous environmental, social, cultural and economic impacts. These implications are complex and interconnected as a system, and will thus have a compounding effect on each other.

Land reclamation for the Coastal Road will lead to chronic flooding in surrounding areas, as we are already seeing this monsoon. This increasingly concerning because of the heavy rains Mumbai experiences, its poor drainage capacities, as well as recent alarming projections of climate change driven sea level rise. Land reclamation will also result in a loss of crucial marine biodiversity in the intertidal zone. This in turn will endanger the livelihoods of the Kolis, the indigenous fishing community who practice artisanal fishing in shallow waters abutting the coastline. Although only approximately 20 hectares of land need to be reclaimed for the road to be constructed, 96 hectares of land will be reclaimed for the project, creating valuable real estate. Equally, the fact that the ₹14,000 crore road will serve only 1.25% of the city’s population seems rather counterintuitive when utilising of public funds and attempting to provide access to more inhabitants of the city. Furthermore, increased vehicular pollution will have severe public health consequences for Mumbaikars.
