36 MonthsPADDINGTON, Australia
28 Nov 2024

Last night the senate passed the new social media legislation. For those playing at home, the numbers that passed in the House were 102-13, and the vote in the Senate went 34-19 in favour of the bill. A recent YouGov poll also found that an overwhelming 77% of Australians support the change.

In less than 6 months, our collective push for policy change achieved the outcome it was aiming for. Systemic change that will genuinely improve the way young people experience growing up in this country for generations to come.

We have never defined ourselves by what we are against, it's why we hate the word 'ban'. We are for healthy teen development, without the influence of social media, focused on the critical 36 Months between 13 and 16. Today is a very significant and emotional day for anyone who is for the same thing. This win is our collective win.

I should also mention it's only the beginning for 36 Months. 'Raise the age' campaigns in New Zealand, the UK and Japan are building steam. And here in Australia we turn our sights to the critical role that education plays in providing more nuanced remedies to the challenges of teen mental health. Everything going on for a teenager will manifest itself at school, and schools really need our belief and support.

Thank you to every person who signed our petition. Your belief that change was possible and your decision to act on that belief created a movement that has changed laws and lifetimes.
