Yesterday on November 7 the Prime Minister announced the Australian government will be raising the minimum age for social media citizenship from 13 to 16. This is a monumental moment and achievement by everyone who has signed our petition. 125000+ signatures is an un-ignorable chorus of voices. A whole hearted thank you to each and every one of you.

In the words of the Australian Prime Minister:

“Social media is doing harm to our kids and I’m calling time on it. I’ve spoken to thousands of parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles. They, like me, are worried sick about the safety of our kids online. And I want Australian parents and families to know that the government has your back. I want parents to be able to say, “Sorry, mate, that’s against the law.” This is a world-leading legislation. We will not allow exemptions if users have parental consent. We will be introducing legislation when Parliament returns in a fortnight’s time.”

Whilst this is a milestone to celebrate, we’re not going to ‘declare victory’ just yet. Legislation still needs to be drafted, introduced to Parliament, debated, voted on and passed into law. Until that happens, we will continue to apply the needed pressure to finish the job.
