Borderlands debuted in 2009 with the first game in its hero shooter series, which immediately developed a dedicated fanbase. In 2012, the much anticipated sequel Borderlands 2 launched and catapulted the series further into fans' hearts.

Since then, it has been 5+ years with only a couple of minor installments in the series (The Pre-Sequel and Tales from the Borderlands) to keep fans satisfied while they eagerly awaited the next installment of the series. That came March 28th, 2019 at PAX East when Randy Pitchford, Gearbox CEO, made the official announcement for Borderlands 3.

After receiving an intense game trailer, fans were promised more information April 3rd, 2019. During that time, PC gamers waited with baited breath to find out whether or not Borderlands 3 would be the latest in a much dissatisfying series of exclusive gaming rights to the Epic Games Store, best known for creating Fortnite.

Unfortunately, many fans were upset when it was revealed that Borderlands 3 is indeed going to be an Epic Exclusive for the first six months of its release.

The issue here is not a matter of Steam v. Epic, but rather it goes much deeper than that. Epic Games Store Terms of Service (herein TOS) states that they have the right to monitor you and your usage and sent data to its parent company. The company in question is Tencent, a major Chinese network known for selling data to the Chinese government, a tie which Tencent has actually been caught lying about. Many PC gamers are staunchly against the Epic Games Store for a variety of reasons, some minor and cosmetic, but this is arguably the biggest and most concerning.

Here is a reddit thread with excellent explanation of what is going on regarding the Epic Games Store, with sources provided: https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/a9lntx/ubisoft_needs_to_stop_with_this_always_online/?st=ju1bqpyg&sh=ada7daeb

Due to fans' concerns about their personal security regarding information about American citizens being sold to the Chinese government, it is unfair and grossly negligent of these issues to make fans wait SIX MONTHS to be able to purchase the game to avoid this. It also shows that all involved with this choice are not operating with their consumers in mind. As such, those who have signed this petition implore all those involved with this decision to retract the exclusivity. Fans have been waiting over 5 years for the release of Borderlands 3, and a lot of fans are not okay with the toxicity that Epic Games and its Store represents in the gaming community with the continued purchase of these exclusive rights. Fans love the game and they want to play it, but they don't want to enable the selling of their personal information to the Chinese government on top of that.

tl;dr: Don't make Borderlands 3 an Epic exclusive because it is essentially forcing fans to choose between selling their personal information to the Chinese government or to wait six months to play a game they've already waited 5+ years for.
