"That Thing You Do!" is a 1996 American comedy, and the writing/directorial debut of Academy Award winning actor Tom Hanks. It takes place in 1964 in Erie, P.A. and is about the rise and fall of a local rock band called "The Wonders", the inner drama within the band, and the ultimate success of their titular hit song "That Thing You Do!". The film's success promoted the release of a soundtrack on CD and cassette, which was released under the name of the fictional record label from the film, Playtone Records (actually Epic records). The soundtrack was also a success, peaking at #21 on the Billboard Charts.
The soundtrack itself hasn't seen a re-release since it's original first pressing. Myself and a few of my friends who have also seen the film, agree that the soundtrack should be re-released on vinyl, possibly in limited quantities. The idea of this album in particular being pressed to vinyl seems to many to be a match made in heaven, as the popularity of the format has been rapidly increasing and the album's songs already have a very classic 60's-esque sound.
Personally, I feel as though it should be released in limited quantities on this upcoming Record Store Day, because many fans of the vinyl format have most likely seen and connected with the movie and this is the one day of the year where they will all be together in one space. I can not stress enough how much this film has impacted my life, and with your help, we can make my dream of having a vinyl copy of it's soundtrack a reality.
Thank you and may Tom Hanks bless your soul.
