Thank you to all 110,000 of you that have signed The Independent's petition so far calling on the UK Government for urgent action to support Ukrainian refugees.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees now says that more than a million refugees have fled Ukraine in just a week, a grim milestone. That number is only going to exponentially rise. Along the refugee trail, where I am, families are still fleeing from the east, the south and the north. I’ve visited churches, theatres and community centres that have been turned into temporary displacement camps. Even these areas are under air bombardment and children spend their nights in bunkers and on the floor.
Every signature is more pressure on the UK Government to act to provide more supplies of food, clothing and shelter to care for Ukrainian refugees, and to make the UK a safe haven for refugees to ensure we take in Ukrainians who want to find safety here.
As well as this petition, we at The Independent have launched a fundraiser to support the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Ukrainian Humanitarian Appeal, which is bringing together 13 leading UK aid charities, including the Red Cross and Save the Children.
I'm pleased to say that the fundraiser has raised nearly £80,000 already for this important cause, but if you haven't donated already, your donation could help us reach £100,000 today.

After signing the petition, you might have been asked for a contribution to help the petition reach new potential supporters via Change.org. I wanted to make clear that this is not our fundraiser. Contributions to petitions are used to show the petition to many more people which in turn helps to grow the number of people who have signed the petition and can then take part in further actions like this fundraiser. You can read more about petition promotions here. If you were asked to make a contribution after signing the petition, and did so in error believing it was our fundraiser, please do reach out to the help desk at Change.org here. They are happy to refund you. To avoid potential confusion, Change.org also switched off promotions for this petition.
Thank you for all your support,
Bel Trew, International Correspondent at The Independent
