Make it a legal requirement to report a cat road traffic accident!
The Issue
How dreadfully upsetting and worrying it is when your cat does not return home! At present they do not have the same treatment of decency when it comes to them becoming a horrible painful mess on the road.... sometimes still half alive! ... other animals have the protection from the present law...the legal requirement that you report any incident to the Police and get veterinary treatment for them. 8,000 cats a year are killed on British roads, every two and a half minutes there is a RTA involving a cat or wild animal. We feel this is inexcusable and a legal requirement including the second favourite pet of the nation should immediately be implemented now, following other similar such petitions that have shown huge numbers of people in favour of making a cat accident reportable. Recently a neighbour of mine asked for people to look in their sheds as her fourteen year old beloved female tabby cat Tigger had not returned home for food like she always did! It seemed the puss had vanished into thin air over the next 4 days while a reporting of a Ginger Tom cat fatality on the main road caused further confusion around the same time. To cut a long story short...it was a misleading description someone innocently had posted on facebook....but in actual fact...it was Tigger all the time! We had searched for days but all the while she had been already knocked down and buried by a kind couple who felt it best the owners kept a better memory of her rather than what she had become at the tradegy where she had a final stroke. All this would have been avoided had it been a legal requirement to report her terrible end. Please add your weight to this cause and sign and share this hopeful last petition for the British Government to finally grant this sensible course of change to the present one we have had for far too long now.
