+ $1 for takeaways at Hawker Centres

The Issue

Coffee cups, straw from your BBT cravings, plastic cutlery and many more single-use sadness.

How many of them land in your hands?

Here’s a sobering statistic - In 2017, we created at least 1.76 billion of plastic waste, with only 6% of it being recycled. Among a hotchpotch of contributing factors, one stand-out culprit lies in Singapore’s takeaway culture.

Is 20 cents for takeaway too cheap of a cost to take convenience for granted?

Moreover, statistics from the Singapore Environment Council shows that our yearly usage of 820 million of supermarket plastic bags could cover 126 times the land area of Gardens by the Bay!!

This petition for +$1 for takeaways may draw the ire of Singaporeans. However, the purpose of this initiative lies not in allowing hawker owners to earn profits, but to activate a plan swifter than 'The Zero Waste Masterplan' to prevent our only landfill site to be #SemakauGaoWasted

Below is a scenario of what I envision for person X buying chicken rice from a hawker stall:
Option A: "Aunty/Uncle, one plate of chicken rice, please!”” - $4.50
Option B: "Aunty/Uncle, one pack of chicken rice, please!)” - $4.50 + $1 for takeaways
Option C: "Aunty/Uncle, one chicken rice takeaway using my container” -  $4.50

I'd like to challenge The Federation of Merchants' Association (Singapore) to be more than a champion for the Heartland Business Community, but to also champion a good cause in creating a greater sense of eco-consciousness throughout hawker stalls in Singapore. Even better if we could save our future generation from the toxicity of plastic.

So sign to support in unity for a sustainable future!
