神奈川県大磯町立大磯小学校PTA・環境サポのメンバーが、2021年6月、大磯の浜に打ちあがったアカウミガメの死体に遭遇しました。

海の中で亡くなって時間が経過していたようで、漂う間に食べられてしまったのか眼はなく、あちこちに血が滲み、体は海水を含んでパンパンでした。
その後、ウミガメの死因調査をされている方が解剖に来られたので、胃の中に多数のプラスチックや釣り針が入っているのを見せていただきました。
ちょうど大磯小学校4年生の総合学習で、子どもたちと一緒に海洋プラスチック問題を学んだばかり。「ああ、やはり…」。そう思ったのもつかの間、「ウミガメの死因はプラスチックより、定置網にかかって溺死する方が圧倒的に多い」というではありませんか。
海の動物を苦しめているのは、海洋プラスチックだけではなかったのです。

私たちの暮らす神奈川県の相模湾には、たくさんの定置網があります。そこから毎日届けられる新鮮で豊かな海の幸。私たちはこの恩恵を大いに受けています。でもそこにウミガメがかかって、息継ぎをできずに命を落としてしまうことがあるなんて…何とかならないものかと動き始めました。

調べると、定置網に装着する「ウミガメ脱出装置」が研究開発されていることを知りました。実証実験では、ウミガメが脱出でき、魚も逃げないということがほぼ証明されていること、でもまだそれが実用化されていないこともわかりました。

それならば、ぜひこの脱出装置を、まず、ここ相模湾の定置網に付けてほしい！

2018年夏、鎌倉市由比ガ浜で打ち上げられたシロナガスクジラの赤ちゃんの胃の中からプラスチックごみが発見されました。これをきっかけに、SDGs未来都市である神奈川県は、「かながわプラごみゼロ宣言」を出し、深刻化する海洋汚染に積極的に取り組んでいます。

そこでさらに、海の豊かさを守るため、持続可能な漁業と海洋生物の多様性の両立を図るため、この「ウミガメ脱出装置」を、神奈川県相模湾の定置網に取り付けるための必要な施策を積極的に講じてくださるよう、また、ウミガメが安心して産卵に来られるよう海岸の自然環境保護を今まで以上に推進してくださるよう、神奈川県知事に求めます。

そして、この神奈川県の取り組みが、アカウミガメ北太平洋個体群の唯一の産卵地である日本全土に広がることを願っています。

In June 2021, one of the members of Oiso Elementary School PTA and environmental team volunteers from Oiso Town, Kanagawa Prefecture, came across the body of a loggerhead sea turtle that had washed up on the beach in Oiso.

It looked like some time had already passed since the turtle had been dead in the ocean and it was probably eaten while drifting; it had no eyes, blood everywhere, and its body was puffed up with seawater.
Later we saw many plastics and fish hooks in the stomach of the turtle when a person investigating the cause of death came to do an autopsy.
We had just learned about the marine plastic issue with the 4th grade children as part of integrated study at Oiso Elementary School. But who would have thought that the drowning in fixed fishing nets is far more common cause of death for sea turtles than plastic?
It turns out that it is not only marine plastic that is causing suffering to marine animals.

In Sagami Bay in Kanagawa Prefecture, where we live, there are many fixed nets that provide us with rich seafood every day. However, when sea turtles are caught in these nets, they sometimes lose their lives because they can't catch their breath. We began to wonder if there was anything we could do.

As we started to do some research, we learned that a "sea turtle escape device" to be attached to a fixed nets is being researched and developed. Demonstration experiments have shown that sea turtles could escape and fish would not, but it was not yet been put to practical use.

If that’s the case, we strongly demand this escape device to be attached to a fix nets here in Sagami Bay!

In the summer of 2018, plastic waste was discovered in the stomach of a baby blue whale washed ashore on Yuigahama Beach in Kamakura City. This triggered Kanagawa Prefecture, an SDGs Future City, to issue the "Kanagawa Plastic Waste Zero Declaration" and proactively tackle the growing seriousness of marine pollution.

Therefore, we would like to further ask the Governor of Kanagawa Prefecture to actively take the necessary measures to attach this "sea turtle escape device" to the fixed nets in Sagami Bay, in order to protect the richness of the sea and to achieve both sustainable fishing and marine biodiversity.

And we hope that the efforts of this Kanagawa Prefecture will spread throughout Japan, the only spawning ground of the North Pacific population of loggerhead turtles.
